The history of the school of foreign languages of Beijing University of technology can be traced back to the Russian teaching and research group established by Beijing Institute of technology in 1952. Foreign language teaching and Research Office was established in 1960, foreign language department was established in 1984, and foreign language institute was established in 2006.
The college has English Department, Japanese department, German department, Spanish Department, College English teaching and Research Office, Graduate English teaching and Research Office, doctoral English teaching and research office and foreign language training center.

English language and literature includes three research directions: linguistics, ESP and British and American literature.

The field of linguistics is mainly engaged in theoretical linguistics and applied linguistics. Theoretical linguistics mainly includes syntactic, semantic, morphological and cognitive studies of language, with syntax as its main research feature; applied linguistics is mainly engaged in second language acquisition, foreign language teaching, language testing and related research fields.
Special purpose English
ESP research direction adopts the functionalist view of language to study the characteristics of language use and related language teaching in specific fields, with the characteristics of scientific English and academic English research.
British and American Literature
The direction of British and American literature studies the literary thoughts, writers, works, literary and cultural theories of various periods in the United States since the Renaissance and the colonial period in North America. It focuses on modern and contemporary literary theories, modern and contemporary British and American poetry and novels. The research direction of British and American literature is characterized by the research and teaching of British and American literature history, literature selective reading, literature theory, narratology and discourse analysis.

The training of master of translation makes full use of the advantages of engineering resources of our school, highlights the characteristics of scientific and technological translation, and offers special courses such as scientific and technological translation; faces the market directly and signs an off campus translation practice base; combines the course teaching with the signed translation project, so as to replace the teaching by training and improve the translation level of students in a large number of translation practices.

We have signed a cooperation agreement with Berkeley College, University of London, UK. Every year, we send some undergraduates to the university to study language, culture or cross professional postgraduate preparation courses, and postgraduate students can study both Chinese and English master's degrees. Depending on the inter university cooperation agreement, students can study at UCL, Oxford University, reading university, University of California, Berkeley, Columbia University, University of Waterloo, University of Saskatchewan and other foreign universities.

In 2019, "language engineering and cognitive computing" laboratory was recognized as the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of industry and information technology. Four mu courses have been built, all of which have been put online.
