IOTA-5560 (3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, CAS: 2530-83-8) is a mainstream epoxy-functional silane coupling agent—equivalent to common commercial grades such as KH-560 and A-187—widely used in adhesives, composite materials, and powder modification. To achieve optimal performance, it is essential to understand its physicochemical properties as well as key guidelines for use and storage.
The product is a colorless, transparent liquid with a density of 1.07, a refractive index of 1.428–1.43, and a flash point of 122°C. It is soluble in organic solvents such as alcohols and ketones. Upon contact with water, it undergoes hydrolysis to form silanols while releasing methanol. The hydrolysate is unstable and prone to intermolecular condensation and self-polymerization; exposure to light, high temperatures, or peroxides accelerates the polymerization of epoxy groups, directly compromising performance.
When preparing the hydrolysate solution, the pH is typically adjusted to approximately 4 using acetic acid, followed by thorough stirring for at least 15 minutes until the solution becomes clear. The prepared solution should ideally be used within 24 hours; if it becomes cloudy or hazy, this indicates self-polymerization has occurred, and the solution should no longer be used.
Storage requires airtight containers kept in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse, away from heat sources and open flames, protected from moisture, and shielded from direct sunlight. Ensure proper ventilation and protective measures during handling to avoid direct contact with skin or eyes.
In terms of applications, it is compatible with resins such as epoxy, phenolic, polyurethane, nylon, and PBT, as well as hydroxyl-rich inorganic substrates like glass, silica, aluminum hydroxide, and mica. Proper control of hydrolysis conditions, addition ratios, and storage/handling practices is crucial to fully realizing the value of IOTA-5560 in coupling, adhesion promotion, and modification, thereby ensuring consistent product quality.
