In Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) silicone rubber formulations, the crosslinker is a crucial ingredient that determines the material's curing speed, crosslinked network structure, and final properties. Methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) is a widely used alkoxysilane crosslinker in this context.
Methyltrimethoxysilane (CAS No. 1185-55-3; molecular formula: CH₃Si(OCH₃)₃; molecular weight: approx. 136.22) contains three hydrolyzable methoxy groups. This structure imparts high reactivity regarding hydrolysis and condensation, making it suitable for use in condensation-cure silicone rubber systems.
When exposed to atmospheric moisture, MTMS undergoes hydrolysis to form active silanols. These subsequently react with active groups on the polysiloxane chains via condensation, gradually forming a three-dimensional Si–O–Si crosslinked network that transforms the liquid or paste-like silicone rubber into a cured, elastic material. MTMS is widely recognized in industry literature as a key crosslinker for condensation-cure silicone rubbers.
Compared to other types of crosslinkers, alkoxysilanes offer high reactivity, allowing for the adjustment of curing behavior through formulation design. MTMS also serves as an important intermediate in the production of silicone materials and silicone resins.
