Optimizing Sealant Processing Flowability with Silane Coupling Agents | A Guide for Formulating Engineers

Silicone sealant systems contain significant amounts of inorganic fillers. Poor dispersion of these fillers increases the system's viscosity, leading to higher resistance during mixing, uneven discharge, and poor extrudability—all of which directly impact production line efficiency and the consistency of the finished product.
When used with appropriate formulations and processing conditions, aminosilane coupling agents can improve the interfacial wettability between inorganic fillers and the silicone matrix. This reduces filler agglomeration, optimizes the overall flow properties of the system, lowers energy consumption during mixing, and enhances ease of processing. Improved flow also facilitates the extrusion of the sealant during application, helping to minimize defects.
Note: The dosage of silane significantly affects both viscosity and curing rate. An excessive amount can alter curing kinetics; therefore, gradient testing is essential during the formulation development stage to strike a balance between processing performance, adhesive strength, and aging resistance.
