Ureido Silane as an Adhesion Promoter for Metal Surface Treatment and Protective Coatings

Improving Metal-Coating Adhesion with Functional Silanes

Metal corrosion is a major concern in industrial equipment, automotive components and construction materials. Protective coatings are widely used to isolate metal surfaces from moisture, oxygen and corrosive environments.

However, coating adhesion is equally important. Poor bonding between the metal substrate and coating may cause peeling, blistering and premature corrosion.

Functional silanes can help improve the interface between metal surfaces and organic coating systems.

3-Ureidopropyltrimethoxysilane contains hydrolyzable methoxy groups and a ureido functional group. Under suitable surface treatment conditions, the silane can hydrolyze and interact with hydroxylated metal oxide surfaces.

Its organic functional group can also interact with compatible coating resins, helping improve interfacial adhesion.

This makes ureido silane a potential adhesion promoter for selected metal primers, protective coatings, adhesives and sealants.

It can also be evaluated for applications involving copper and other metal substrates, depending on surface condition and coating chemistry.

Unlike mercapto-functional silanes, IOTA-1524 contains a ureido group rather than a sulfur-containing thiol group. Therefore, it should not be marketed as a mercapto silane or assumed to provide the same metal-binding mechanism.

For industrial users, surface cleaning, oxide condition, humidity, pretreatment concentration and curing conditions should all be evaluated.
