Overview of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)

Hits: 952 img

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a linear polymer of high molecular organic silicon, commonly known as organic silicon, which is widely used in the manufacture of microfluidic chips. In addition, it can also be used as food additive, lubricant, etc.

The empirical formula of PDMS (C2H6OSi) n is shown in the figure above. It is an almost inert polymer with high oxidation resistance. Once PDMS become hydrophobic elastomers, polar solvents such as water will be difficult to wet PDMS, which will make the surface of PDMS easy to adsorb hydrophobic contaminants in the water. Although PDMS has good inertia and high oxidation resistance, it is prone to deformation and expansion in the presence of some organic solvents (such as chloroform, diisopropylamine and ether), so its application in the field of organic chemistry is not ideal.
