A Green Revolution in Metal Surface Treatment: Silane Coupling Agents Replace Traditional Phosphating Processes

In the automotive parts, home appliance casing, and construction machinery industries, traditional phosphating processes suffer from environmental problems such as phosphorus-containing wastewater discharge, high energy consumption, and complex processes. This silane pretreatment agent contains multiple hydrolyzable alkoxysilane groups and functional groups (such as amino, epoxy, and mercapto groups) that can coordinate with the metal surface, forming a 100-500 nm thick organic-inorganic hybrid film on the metal surface. This provides excellent corrosion resistance and enhances the adhesion of subsequent coatings. Salt spray tests show that the electrophoretic coating after silane treatment achieves a salt spray resistance time of 800-1200 hours, comparable to phosphating, but with a 50% shorter process flow, 40% lower energy consumption, and no phosphorus or chromium wastewater discharge.
