Concept and application of silane coupling agent

Hits: 949 img

Silane coupling agent is a kind of organosilicon compound containing two groups with different chemical properties in the molecule at the same time. Its classical product can be expressed by general formula YSiX3. Where, Y is a non-hydrolyzable group and X is a hydrolyzable group. Because of this particular structure, silane coupling agents work at the interface between inorganic materials (such as glass, metals or minerals) and organic materials (such as organic polymers, coatings or adhesives), combining or coupling two distinct materials. It can enhance the affinity between organic compounds and inorganic compounds, and enhance the physical and chemical properties of composite materials, such as strength, toughness, electrical properties, water resistance and corrosion resistance.

When organic polymers are reinforced with glass fibers or minerals, the interface or interphase between polymers and inorganic materials involves complex interactions between many physical and chemical factors. These factors are related to adhesive force, physical strength, expansion coefficient, concentration gradient and product performance retention. An important destructive force affecting adhesion is the migration of water to an inorganic - enhanced hydrophilic surface. Water eroded the interface and destroyed the bonding.

"Real" coupling agents can form water-resistant bonds at the interface of inorganic and organic materials. Silane coupling agent has unique chemical and physical properties, which not only enhances the bonding strength, but also prevents the bonding disintegration at the interface during the aging and use of the composite. Coupling agents confer a stable bond between two different, difficult-to-bond surfaces.

The flexural strength of composite materials can be increased by more than 40% by selecting appropriate silane. Silane coupling agents also enhance the bonding strength between the coating and the adhesive, while increasing resistance to humidity and other hostile environmental conditions.

Other advantages offered by silane coupling agents include:

1, better wet inorganic materials

2. Lower viscosity when combined

3. Smoother composite surface

4. Reduce the inhibition of inorganic materials on thermosetting composite catalyst

5. More clear and transparent reinforced plastics
